Mountain Ranges: Guardians of Dilijan

The mountains of Dilijan are not just natural masterpieces but also keepers of history. Did you know that each peak has its own little story? From the ancient Arshakuni kings’ residence near Mount Ovk to the icy caves of Sartsapat, this region is where nature and history intertwine to create a unified and harmonious picture. Today, this picturesque landscape attracts tourists from all over the world. In this article, we will tell you about the most significant peaks of Dilijan and why they deserve your attention.

Ovk

The highest peak among the Ijevan mountains in the Tavush region. It is located 7 km northwest of the namesake village, which is also the highest-altitude settlement in the Dilijan community. In ancient times, this area served as a residence for the kings of the Arshakuni dynasty. Not far from the Ovk summit lie the remains of the 12th-century monastery of St. Andrew, founded by the Armenian historian Vardan Areveltsi, who carried out extensive scientific research there. Height: 2507 meters.

Apakekar

1.5 km from the village of Ovk lies the peak of Apakekar, situated in the southwestern part of the Ijevan mountain range. Southeast of the peak is the village of Haghartsin, home to one of Dilijan’s main attractions – the Haghartsin Monastery (11th–13th centuries). The mountain was previously called "Abehakar," from the Armenian word "abeha," meaning monk, as locals thought it resembled a long dark priest’s robe. Later, it was renamed "Apakekar," derived from "apaki" (glass in Armenian), as the stones at the summit reflected light like glass. Height: 1651 meters.

Sartsapat

The peak or ridge of Sartsapat lies between the Arosaget and Sarakhbyur rivers, 7 km northwest of the village of Haghartsin, near the mountains Dimats and Apakekar. The name "Sartsapat" translates from Armenian as "icy wall." Locals have various stories explaining the name, one being that the mountain is surrounded by white cliffs resembling ice. Close to Sartsapat is the Sartsatun cave ("icy house" in Armenian), where even in summer, the temperature remains below freezing, and ice formations can be found. Height: 2532 meters.

Dimats

There are two mountain peaks – Eastern and Western Airikar. They are located near the Shamakhyan district, close to the border of the Tavush and Lori regions. The name of the mountains translates to "widow’s stone." Together with #GoToDili, you can take a trip to a scenic cliff near the peaks – "Simba Mountain," which is clearly visible from Dilijan. The view from there is even more impressive than from the peaks themselves, making it one of Dilijan’s most famous natural landmarks. Eastern Airikar's height: 2767 meters, Western Airikar's height: 2781 meters.
